Steps To Take If You Believe Your Dog Is Suffering From Heat Exhaustion

Aatu Leppo

In the warmer times of the year, extra care needs to be given to dogs as they are prone to becoming dehydrated easily. If you believe your dog is suffering from heat exhaustion, fast action needs to be taken in an attempt to reverse symptoms. Here are steps to take if you suspect your pet has become overheated.

Know The Signs Of A Problem

When a dog becomes dehydrated there are a few signals you can pick up on so you can get them help as soon as possible. Your dog will avoid exercising and may not even want to walk around at all. It may seem lethargic and want to sleep rather than spend time with your family. In severe cases, a dog will have difficulty walking and can become dizzy. If you suspect a problem caused by the heat, be proactive in providing your dog with a comfortable area where a cooler temperature is present.

Get Your Dog To A Cool Area

It is of the utmost importance to remove your dog from an environment where the temperature is extremely hot and humid. Your dog will pant as a means to attempt to cool down its body. This works somewhat, but it takes energy. Bringing your pet to an indoor location with air conditioning is best. If this type of area is not available, find a spot in the shade.

Give Your Dog Water Immediately

Your dog needs rehydration when heat exhaustion is imminent. It is best to always carry a dog water bottle and bowl so you can give your pooch a drink whenever it appears to need one. If you do not have water available, you need to find a source right away. In city areas ask local business owners or homeowners if they would spare a bowl of water for your pet. In country settings look for a stream, river, or brook if you do not have a water bottle available.

See An Emergency Vet If Conditions Do Not Cease

If your dog seems in distress even after it is brought to a cooler area and given water, you need to bring it to an emergency veterinarian. If heat exhaustion and dehydration have already begun, your pet needs intravenous help to get moisture into its body as soon as possible. Call a 24-hour emergency veterinarian in your area to let them know the symptoms your dog is experiencing and let them know you are on the way to their office. This way they can be aware of your imminent arrival and treat your dog immediately.
